The 2006 OSS Watch Survey is available (you may also take a look at the executive summary). This survey studies the usage of Open Source Software (FLOSS) in Higher Education (HE) and Further Education (FE) institutions in the UK. The previous survey was from 2003 and some improvements have been made. This time, 23 institutions answered the questions.
The study not only looks at the usage but also into the reasons behind it, contribution to the OSS community and others. Contrary to the 2003 version, this time the vendor lock-in was said to be an issue among the institutions. The study is definitively worth a look.
One of the results states that 56% of the FE institutions use Moodle. This is consistent with the feeling you get about the issue here in Chile, but I would not be surprised that the usage percentage would be higher here (mostly because of the lack of legacy systems and because licensing costs tend to have a greater impact).

Hace tiempo que tenía la inquietud de si nuestra capacidad de conectarnos con quien queramos en cualquier parte del mundo no nos hace una sociedad más polarizada. Porque seguimos teniendo la misma capacidad de atención y de abarcar una cierta cantidad de temas y pensamientos, pero ahora no estamos obligados a interactuar con quienes no queremos. ¿Qué haría un Hitler en los tiempos actuales? Parece obvio que partiría por crear comunidades on-line para divulgar sus ideas y obtener fieles seguidores, sin siquiera levantar sospechas en personas contrarias a sus ideas. Hasta que sea demasiado tarde.
Nos contactamos con gente que piensa parecido a nosotros, en la mayoría de los casos nos enteramos de ideas discordes por medio de críticas negativas que se le hacen. Se ha hablado mucho últimamente del proyecto de Negroponte One Laptop per Child, que tiene sus defensores locales en varias partes, como en http://www.lnds.net/ulpn/, así como también críticos y/o escépticos. Muchos han criticado al gobierno por su decisión de hacer un piloto en dos escuelas antes de tomar una decisión.
¿Cuál sería el peor escenario a mi juicio? Que el gobierno participe, el proyecto funcione al menos en la parte hardware, se entregan los notebooks a los niños, se paguen, y que el resultado sea muy diferente del esperado. …
